Works great for checking wheel bearingsMy husband said it worked goodKinda pain to use.. doesnt really tell you too much.. wouldnt buy another if i lost it..Just about the only option out there for this type of "tool."Yes, you can get generic sheets of LCD that react to magnetic fields, but check the reviews on those things, as they don't always work.ATE has done a great job and quality control to get this tool to work consistently.Yes, it's pricey for what you get, but this tool works 100% of the time without fail; just keep it in a safe place away from getting smashed or bang up.I have been using this for a couple of years now and it is a must if doing wheel bearings on a car that reads the abs from the bearing. Good insurance to make sure that the bearing was made properly before installation. Half the price from the Dealer. Highly recommend for the Professional Mechanic. This tool is used to inspect the "magnet lines" on the ABS encoder ring part of bearing that are connected to ABS (anti-lock brake) systems. Those magnetic lines generate the AC millivolt pulse signal via a stationary sensor for each wheel that is sent to the ABS computer. The encoder ring looks like a flat plastic surface on one side of the bearing and has embedded magnetic line that are invisible without a tool like this. Installing a bearing with missing lines or too many lines or less lines as compare to your removed OEM bearing (when ABS was working properly) can cause ABS brake malfunction with warning light issues. I had to diagnose such a headache problem after installing a pair of rear Reybestos bearings on my 2008 Honda Accord. I surprising found "too many" magnetic lines on a third Reybestos bearing I ordered have on hand for repair/ then found defect on the 3rd bear/ returned to Rockauto with picture documentation. That defect caused ABS fault codes that translates into "wrong size tire" when all foour tires were same and stock size. A deeper ScanTool read produced 12 OEM ABS -VSA fault codes. I ordered a new set of Timken bearings. My inspection with this card tool plus magnifying digital pictures showed me magnetic line count on the Timken bearing matched up to my old OEM bearing (OEM means original equipment manufacturer). Giant help in figuring out my ABS malfunction problem. Installation of Timkens bearings provided full resolution of my ABS issues on my 2008 Honda Accord. ... Read some Honda Dealers even do an inspection of ABS encoder rings on the OEM bearings leaving their parts department because of the diagnostic headache produced when an oddball defect slips by. I would recommend using this encoder ring reader tool before swapping out any ABS related bearing. Thanks to the suppliers here for making this available!I got this after seeing this (or a similar item) being used to check the ABS magnetic rings on press-in wheel bearings. It will show either the fine toothed ring or the larger chunkier teeth of the cheaper bearings. It was able to show me that my National bearings for a Jaguar X-type were large segments vs. the Timken bearings with the finer teeth. My current ABS issues with the Jag (wheel speed mismatch only) are likely related to the cheap bearings used that probably have the incorrect ABS ring teeth in them. The only way to know is the pull them and see.I recommend getting this little thing IF you do a lot of bearing replacements like this (not for wheel hub bearings, but stand-alone bearings that are pressed into a steering knuckle). Or if you have some other reason to view magnetic fields. :-)Really cool product. I originally changed my passenger rear wheel bearing in my 2005 Honda CRV with a cheap one from that other large auction website. I bought a "Dura International 29511029" for $18.95 shipped and thought it was a really good deal. I installed it and it seemed to work fine until I got on the interstate. At around 70 mph the ABS/VSC lights came on. It would reset every time you turn off the car, but as soon as you hit 70 mph they came back on. I figured I must have damaged the ABS sensor when I installed the bearing so I bought a new sensor. No change. I then bought I high quality bearing from Amazon "Timken 511029". After installing I no longer had any ABS/VSC issues. I purchased the ATE 760130 ABS Test Card to look at the Dura International bearing I removed to see if I could see the damage. It looks fine. Best I can tell it has the same number of lines but it is difficult to count. In the future I will just buy high quality bearings and then verify there was no damage in shipping using this tool. Just wanted to make certain you realize your bearing could look OK with this tool but still not work. I don't blame the tool, but think if you are using bearings with ABS encoder rings, your might as well buy quality and then verify they are not damaged with this tool before installing.Very happyGreat productMakes it easy to compare bearings to original or to compare replacemnts. Also can visualize damaged sensor rings or locate the correct side of bearing to correctly orient for installation.Bit pricey but pretty much a good must have tool.
